Throughout my life, particularly after sharing about my professional background and adventures, people (often) shake their heads and say, “You are a BADASS!”.  I typically laugh, mostly because, well, how else is someone supposed to respond to that?!  It’s a little awkward…  It has taken me years to be comfortable with people having that image of me and, now, I not only embrace it, I own it.

For me, “Badass” defines women who are courageous, self-assured, and go after what they want vs. being stymied by what others consider socially acceptable or “appropriate”.  Badass women tend to be bold, brave, and have our own opinions – imagine that!  We don’t rest on our laurels; we are always looking for the next challenge.

There’s a book by Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, a Pulitzer Prize willing historian, entitled, “Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History.”  Badass women do not always behave and that is a good thing.  We may not be angels but we are fierce, loyal, and do not let too much get in our way.

Oh, and we Badasses typically love other “Badass” women, like Laurel.

Marybeth, if I have the right person in mind, you seemed very well-behaved in Mark Beitel’s meeting, Friday. Congrats on a great accomplishment. You certainly have the right attitude (sounds stuffy, doesn’t it) to get off to a great start and more greatness in the future..

Regret I did not get to talk to you to receive a sample of “BADASS” first hand. Sounds like something to emulate if it is not limited to your gender. Have a great time.

Sincerely, Bob Reuter

I knew you were a badass back in highschool. I’m looking forward to following your story. From one badass sister to another. Wishing you all the best!

Mary Beth,

This is amazing, and also the first blog I will follow… I remember the first time telling my family about you and describing you as “badass”. You wear it so appropriately and with grace. I knew the day I met you, you were special. You are an inspiration and support like no other… treasure our talks, miss you. You are a rare gem in my eyes… Daisy & I ❤️Ya…

Congrats MB on getting this pig finally off the ground (pun intended) – you are anything but “appropriate” and that is just one of the many reason why I love you!!

Congrats, little sister! THIS is really badass! To be clear, anyone who is good at anything is a ‘badass’. Being a badass in ny profession requires a combination of technical proficiency, political and social skills, and taking that to an artistic level. So proud of you!
